Ode to the Wetsuit

Thursday, 23 June 2011

It seems the line that defines swimwear from outerwear is becoming somewhat blurred. Artists and designers alike are developing new and exciting ways to show that swimwear, really isn't just made for the sea. Lisa Marie Fernadez proves this with her line of swimwear, adding a twist to the little black dress.

For his SS09 collection, California Native Julian Louie created a collection by mixing Neoprene (the durable fabric most commonly used for making wetsuits) with soft tulles and bright pops of colour.

Surprisingly, the merging of fabrics works beautifully. The wetsuit is proving to be inspirational from catwalk to high street, with the Cynthia Rowley for Roxy collaboration hitting the nail on the head.

Michael Kors is no stranger to the trend also having used it for inspiration for his SS09 collection.

The designer looks set to carry on the 'Ode to the Wetsuit' trend debuting neon garments with a twist for his 2012 Resort collection.

I love this trend and I'm looking forward to see what other designers come up with in light of this unexpected pairing.
